The work of John Cage will probably long been a challenge to the musical world and its conventions. His approach was too often caricatured and reduced to a mere provocation. In reality, it reveals the emergence of an authentic musical spirit, inseparable from a philosophy of life which intertwine art and everyday life. Inventor of the prepared piano, Cage is also the initiator of major artistic currents of the post-war and forms of expression as happenings, performance, multimedia installations, and so on.

We do not know enough ultimately little of this polymorphous work, sometimes oriented toward music, sometimes to the poetry and the visual arts. The extreme diversity implies a real excess of artistic categories. Cage was not the man for taking power over people or sounds. Without seeming to, without wanting to impose anything, it taught us to listen, to be attentive to what happen around us, beyond our tastes and cultural a priori. At a time when we can not stop perpetuating the old myth of neo-romantic artist and the sacredness of the work of art, the real scandal Cage may lie there.
